The bands, and the tax-free slice

Ghana's income tax runs on annual bands, with the first slice free of tax:

Annual chargeable incomeRate on that slice
First GH₵5,8800%
Next GH₵1,320 (to GH₵7,200)5%
Next GH₵1,560 (to GH₵8,760)10%
Next GH₵38,000 (to GH₵46,760)17.5%
Next GH₵192,000 (to GH₵238,760)25%
To GH₵600,00030%
Above GH₵600,00035%

Note the shape: the lower bands are narrow, so tax rises quickly in the early range and then flattens. Because the bands are progressive, only the slice inside each is taxed at that rate — your effective rate is always lower than your top band, and a raise always leaves you better off.

SSNIT — 5.5%, and it caps

The employee contribution to SSNIT is 5.5% of basic salary, applied up to an insurable-earnings ceiling of GH₵69,000 per month. Your employer contributes a further share on top.

SSNIT is not a tax — it buys you retirement, invalidity and survivor benefits under the national scheme. Two things worth doing that almost nobody does:

  • Request your contribution statement and check it against the jobs you have held. Gaps — an employer who deducted but never remitted, or a period recorded under wrong details — are far easier to fix now than at retirement;
  • Find out what it will actually pay. A capped contribution means a capped benefit, so for most middle earners SSNIT is a floor rather than a retirement plan. Build above it — see the retirement calculator.

Checking your payslip

  1. Run your gross through the calculator and compare each line;
  2. Confirm SSNIT at 5.5% is calculated on the right base;
  3. Identify every other deduction and confirm you agreed to it in writing;
  4. Keep your payslips — they are required for loan applications and are your evidence in a dispute.

What else takes a share

PAYE is not the whole picture. VAT and the associated levies are charged at an effective 20% on most goods and services in this calculator — see the VAT calculator, and note that Ghana's structure combines VAT with separate levies, which is why the effective rate is higher than the headline VAT figure alone.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my PAYE different from this estimate?

Usually allowances or benefits treated differently, or a SSNIT base that differs from your gross. Check each line and query differences with payroll in writing.

Is the first GH₵5,880 really tax free?

The first GH₵5,880 of annual chargeable income is taxed at 0%. Chargeable income is after allowable deductions, so the gross you can earn before paying anything is higher.

Does SSNIT reduce my taxable income?

Contributions to the scheme generally reduce chargeable income — the calculator applies the standard treatment. Confirm your specific position with the GRA or a practitioner.

Should I refuse a raise to stay in a lower band?

Never. Only the extra slice is taxed at the higher rate.

Where do I check my SSNIT record?

Request a statement from SSNIT directly, using your identification. Do it every few years and after every job change.
