Zenith Bank Ghana Review (2026): Is It Right for You? — Rateweb

Zenith Bank (Ghana) Ltd is the Ghanaian subsidiary of Nigeria's Zenith Bank Plc, licensed by the Bank of Ghana and known for one of the fastest fully digital account-opening flows in the country. It is a mid-sized bank by branch count that competes on service and technology rather than reach. This review sets out what it offers, what it costs to find out, and who it is for.

Who Zenith Ghana is

Zenith Bank Ghana was incorporated in April 2005 and licensed by the Bank of Ghana in September 2005 as a universal bank under the Banking Act, 2004. It is a subsidiary of Zenith Bank Plc, one of Nigeria's largest banks, which gives it a well-capitalised parent and a group presence across West Africa, the UK and the UAE. Unlike GCB, Ecobank or CalBank it is not listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange, so you will not find a share price — but it does publish audited annual reports on its website, which are the place to check its capital and loan-book health.

Reach: 43 business locations

The bank describes 43 business locations — branches and agencies — plus ATMs and point-of-sale terminals across Ghana. That is a compact footprint, concentrated in Accra, Tema, Kumasi and the regional capitals. If you need frequent cash deposits outside those centres, GCB or Fidelity will serve you better; if you bank mostly on your phone, the branch count barely matters.

Access and mobile banking

  • USSD code: *966# — a well-featured USSD service, including instant account opening.
  • Z-Mobile Ghana App (Android/iOS) — full mobile banking, and it lets non-Zenith customers open an Instant Account directly in the app.
  • Internet banking and GhanaPay support for wallet-style payments.

What USSD and the app can do

  • Open an account instantly by dialling *966*0# and following the prompts — no branch visit needed to get started.
  • GhQR merchant payments via *966*3# — select GhQR payment, enter the merchant's terminal ID, and pay.
  • Transfer money to MoMo wallets and other bank accounts, view your last five transactions, buy airtime and data bundles, and pay bills.
  • In the app: schedule transfers, set travel notifications, find branches, card-to-card and account-to-card transfers, and manage your PIN/password.

Accounts, cards and products

Zenith's personal range is broader than its branch count suggests:

  • Everyday accounts: Savings, Current, and a Cheque and Save hybrid.
  • Targeted accounts: the Aspire account for younger customers, a Diaspora Account for Ghanaians abroad, Zenith Children's and Children's Plus accounts, and Foreign Exchange / Foreign Currency accounts for holding dollars, pounds or euros.
  • Cards: Visa Classic, Gold and Platinum debit cards; Visa Classic and Platinum credit cards; a Mastercard Platinum credit card; a Visa prepaid card; a virtual card for online use; an Eazypay card and an SME Business Card.
  • Lending: personal loans, with an online calculator to estimate repayments.
  • Investment products through the bank.

The credit-card range is a genuine differentiator — relatively few Ghanaian banks issue Visa and Mastercard credit cards to retail customers. As with any credit card, ask for the interest rate, the annual fee and the late-payment charge in writing before you sign.

Opening an account: what you'll need

The *966*0# instant account is real, but it is an entry-level account. Under the Bank of Ghana's Ghana Card rule (sole ID at licensed institutions since 1 July 2022) and its revised late-2025 guidance on digital onboarding, you will be asked for your Ghana Card number and a biometric or liveness check to move beyond basic limits. Keep the card handy and expect an upgrade step — usually in the app or at a branch — before you can transact freely.

Is your money protected?

Yes, up to the statutory limit. Zenith Ghana is a member of the Ghana Deposit Protection Scheme under Act 931, which insures GH¢6,250 per depositor per bank, principal and interest included. Balances above that are recovered through the receiver if a bank fails. The limit is now reviewed every two years under the 2025 amendment, so check the current figure in our GDPC explainer.

If something goes wrong

Start with Zenith Direct on 0302 680 884 / 0542 000 111, the toll-free line 0800 10100 (Telecel), or info@zenithbank.com.gh, and insist on the complaint reference number the Bank of Ghana requires. The bank has 20 working days to decide (plus up to 10 if it tells you the case is complex). If you get no answer or disagree, you have 20 working days to petition the Bank of Ghana's Financial Stability Department, which must rule within 20 working days; its decision is binding on the bank.

Who it suits

Zenith's *966*0# instant account opening is genuinely fast — a good option if you want a bank account today, entirely from your phone. Its GhQR support makes everyday merchant payments easy, its foreign-currency accounts suit anyone paid or saving in dollars or pounds, and its credit-card range is one of the widest available to retail customers.

It suits less well if you need branches in smaller towns, or if you want a listed bank whose numbers you can track daily on the GSE.

Before you open an account

  • Confirm current fees, particularly for inter-bank transfers and GhQR merchant payments.
  • Ask exactly what verification (Ghana Card, address proof, biometrics) is needed to lift the limits on an instant account.
  • If you are after a credit card, get the full pricing in writing first.
