Access Bank Ghana Review (2026): Is It Right for You?
Access Bank (Ghana) Plc is the Ghanaian arm of the pan-African Access Bank Group, one of the continent's largest banking groups by customer numbers. It is licensed by the Bank of Ghana, listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange, and known for a deliberately simple digital banking setup rather than a long feature list. This review covers what that simplicity buys you, what it leaves out, and who the bank is really for.
Who Access Bank Ghana is
Access Bank launched as a full-service commercial bank in Ghana in May 2009, once Bank of Ghana licensing was complete. In 2016 it completed an initial public offer and listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange as the eleventh bank on the market; it trades under the ticker ACCESS, so its results, capital and dividend record are public. The parent, Access Holdings, is headquartered in Lagos and operates across Africa, the UK and beyond, which gives the Ghanaian subsidiary group capital and cross-border rails within the Access network.
Reach: branches and ATMs
The bank is generally reported to operate around 56 branches and more than 100 ATMs, with ATMs placed in malls, the airport, campuses and fuel stations as well as branches. Its head office and main branch are at Starlets 91 Road, Accra. That is a mid-sized network — comfortably ahead of Zenith or Standard Chartered on branches, well behind GCB and Fidelity. Confirm the nearest branch and ATM with the locator in the app before you commit if in-person access matters to you.
Access and mobile banking
- USSD code:
*901#— standard USSD banking for customers without reliable internet, available across networks. - Access Bank mobile app — free to use, with real-time access to your accounts.
- Internet banking for personal and business customers.
What the app and USSD can do
- Transfers to other Access Bank accounts and to accounts at other local banks.
- Branch and ATM locator — useful for finding your nearest access point while travelling within Ghana.
- Airtime, bills and mobile-money transfers.
- Straightforward, simplified transaction flows — the app is built around a small set of core functions done reliably rather than a large feature list.
Accounts and products
Access offers the standard personal range — current and savings accounts, fixed deposits, salary accounts, personal loans and debit cards — together with a business and corporate banking arm that is, in practice, the bank's centre of gravity. Two things stand out on the business side:
- Access is one of the onboarded partner banks for Development Bank Ghana, the state-backed wholesale lender that on-lends medium- to long-term funding to SMEs through commercial banks. If you run a business that needs a three-to-seven-year facility rather than an overdraft, that route is worth asking about — see Development Bank Ghana's SME facility.
- The group's cross-border network makes Access a practical bank for traders and businesses with counterparties in Nigeria and the wider West African region.
For personal customers, the honest summary is that the account range is competent rather than distinctive. Ask for the current tariff guide and check the monthly maintenance fee, inter-bank transfer charge and MoMo transfer pricing against a couple of rivals before you decide.
Opening an account: what you'll need
Since 1 July 2022 the Bank of Ghana has required the Ghana Card as the sole identification for transactions at all licensed institutions, and its revised late-2025 guidance requires biometric verification with liveness checks for digital onboarding. Bring your Ghana Card to a branch, or expect the app to verify it against the National Identification Authority database with a selfie check.
Is your money protected?
Yes, up to the statutory limit. Access Bank Ghana is a member of the Ghana Deposit Protection Scheme under Act 931, which insures GH¢6,250 per depositor per bank, principal and interest included; larger balances are recovered through the receiver if a bank fails. The limit is reviewed every two years under the 2025 amendment, so check the current figure in our GDPC explainer.
If something goes wrong
Complain to Access first — via its contact centre, the app or a branch — and note the complaint reference number the Bank of Ghana obliges every provider to issue. The bank has 20 working days to give a decision (plus up to 10 if it tells you in advance the case is complex). If it does not, or you disagree, you may petition the Bank of Ghana's Financial Stability Department within 20 working days; BoG must investigate and rule within 20 working days, and its decision is binding on the bank.
Who it suits
Access Bank suits customers who want a reliable, no-nonsense banking app backed by a large pan-African group, without an extensive list of add-on features. Its group scale and DBG partnership make it a natural choice for business owners looking at longer-term funding, and its network helps if you trade across West Africa.
It suits less well if you want the richest personal app in the market — Fidelity and CalBank offer more bill-pay, QR and wallet features — or if a very large branch network is your priority.
Before you open an account
- Confirm current account fees and minimum balances directly with Access Bank.
- If you are a business owner, ask specifically about the DBG on-lending facility and its eligibility criteria.
- If you need a wider range of digital features, compare against Fidelity or CalBank before deciding.
