Fidelity Bank Ghana Review (2026): Is It Right for You?
Fidelity Bank Ghana is the largest privately owned, wholly Ghanaian bank in the country. It is licensed by the Bank of Ghana and has built its reputation on two things: the deepest agent network in Ghanaian banking, and tight integration with mobile money. If your financial life runs through MoMo and you want a bank that treats that as normal rather than as an afterthought, Fidelity is the obvious first look. Here is the full picture.
Who Fidelity is
Fidelity received its universal banking licence on 28 June 2006, becoming the 22nd bank licensed under the Banking Act, 2004 (Act 673), having started as a discount house. It is owned by Ghanaian individuals, institutional investors and its senior executives — there is no foreign parent — and it is not listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange, though it publishes its audited financial statements. Over the past decade it has grown into one of the largest banks in Ghana by deposits and customer numbers.
Reach: 82 branches and more than 5,000 agents
Fidelity operates 82 branches and a network of more than 5,000 Fidelity agents — shops, pharmacies and kiosks that can open accounts, take deposits and pay out cash on the bank's behalf. Its agency banking started in 2013 with 24 agents and received full Bank of Ghana approval in early 2014, so it is the most mature agent network in the sector. For anyone outside a regional capital, that agent density is the practical difference between Fidelity and most rivals: you can bank in your own town without a branch.
Access and mobile banking
- USSD code:
*776#— works from any phone without data, and can also open a Fidelity Smart Account on the spot, not just manage an existing one. - Fidelity Mobile App (Android/iOS) — self-registration in-app, no branch visit required to get started.
- Internet banking for personal and business customers.
What the app and USSD can do
- Send money directly to all MoMo wallets in Ghana — genuinely useful if your daily spending runs through mobile money.
- Pay utilities — DStv, GOtv, Ghana Water (GWCL), ECG — from the app.
- Ghana Card unlock — use your Ghana Card to instantly regain access if your app password or PIN gets locked, without a branch visit.
- Agent cash-out approval — approve a withdrawal request from your phone so you can collect cash at a Fidelity agent without a card.
- Scheduled transfers and payments, so recurring bills don't get missed.
Accounts and products
The Smart Account is the entry point: a low-requirement account you can open by USSD or in the app with your Ghana Card. Above it sit standard current and savings accounts, fixed deposits, salary accounts, personal loans and debit cards, plus SME and corporate banking. Fidelity has also been active in women's banking and in lending to small traders through its agent network.
On fees, the question to ask is how the account tier prices the two things you will do most with Fidelity — MoMo transfers and agent cash-out. Get the current tariff guide and check those lines first, then the monthly maintenance fee and inter-bank transfer charge.
Opening an account: what you'll need
Since 1 July 2022 the Ghana Card has been the only identification
accepted for transactions at Bank of Ghana–licensed institutions, and the
Bank's revised late-2025 guidance requires biometric verification with liveness
checks for digital onboarding. Fidelity's *776# and in-app onboarding are
built around the card: you will enter your Ghana Card number and, for the app,
pass a selfie check. Agents can also open accounts with the card in hand.
Is your money protected?
Yes, up to the statutory limit. Fidelity is a member of the Ghana Deposit Protection Scheme under Act 931, which insures GH¢6,250 per depositor per bank, principal and interest included; larger balances are recovered from the receiver if a bank fails. The limit is reviewed every two years under the 2025 amendment, so confirm the current figure in our GDPC explainer.
If something goes wrong
Complain to Fidelity first — through its contact centre, the app, a branch or an agent — and keep the complaint reference number every provider must issue under Bank of Ghana rules. The bank has 20 working days to decide (up to 10 more if it tells you in advance the case is complex). If it does not, or you disagree, petition the Bank of Ghana's Financial Stability Department within 20 working days; BoG must investigate and rule within 20 working days, and its decision binds the bank.
Who it suits
Fidelity is a strong pick if mobile money is central to how you spend — its
MoMo-wallet transfers and agent-network cash-out make it easy to move between
"bank money" and "wallet money" with little friction. The *776# instant
account opening is convenient if you want to start banking today, from your
phone, and the agent network makes it one of the most accessible banks outside
the cities.
It suits less well if you want a foreign-owned parent for comfort, a listed share price to track, or cross-border rails — in which case compare Ecobank or Stanbic.
Before you open an account
- Confirm current fees for MoMo transfers and agent cash-out specifically — these are where Fidelity's pricing matters most.
- Check the transaction limits on a Smart Account and what upgrades them.
- Compare Fidelity's savings and fixed-deposit rates against Treasury bills for the same period before parking a large sum.
