Ecobank Ghana Review (2026): Is It Right for You? — Rateweb

Ecobank Ghana PLC is the Ghanaian subsidiary of Ecobank Transnational Incorporated, the pan-African group present in 33 African countries. It is one of the largest banks in Ghana by assets, listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange and licensed by the Bank of Ghana. Its distinctive strength is regional reach: if your money needs to move across borders on the continent, Ecobank's own rails are hard to beat. This review looks at what it offers at home and abroad, and who should choose it.

Who Ecobank Ghana is

Ecobank Ghana has operated in the country for more than three decades and trades on the Ghana Stock Exchange under the ticker EGH, where it is consistently among the most valuable listed companies. The parent, ETI, is headquartered in Lomé and runs a single technology platform across its markets — which is what makes instant Ecobank-to-Ecobank transfers to Nigeria, Côte d'Ivoire, Togo or Kenya possible from a Ghanaian account. Because it is listed, its audited results are public every year; the bank also reports to the GSE on a quarterly basis.

Reach: branches, ATMs and Xpress Points

Ecobank Ghana is generally reported to operate around 77 branches and over 200 ATMs nationwide, supplemented by Ecobank Xpress Points — agent locations where you can deposit, withdraw and open an Xpress Account without visiting a branch. That puts it in the top tier for physical reach, behind only GCB and roughly level with Fidelity on branches.

Access and mobile banking

  • USSD code: *770# — cardless banking without internet, usable on any phone.
  • Ecobank Mobile App (Android/iOS) — full account management, transfers and payments, plus the pan-African reach: send money to Ecobank accounts and wallets across all 33 countries the group operates in.
  • The Xpress Account — a digital account you can open with just a phone number, no branch visit needed.

What the app and USSD can do

  • Balance checks and transaction history.
  • Cardless withdrawal and virtual card creation, funded from your account.
  • Airtime top-up for yourself or others, bill and merchant payments.
  • Travel notifications for card security, and card block/unblock in-app.
  • Cross-border transfers to Ecobank customers across Africa — a genuine differentiator if you have family, business or travel ties elsewhere on the continent.

Accounts and products

Beyond the Xpress Account, Ecobank offers the full retail range — current and savings accounts in several tiers, fixed deposits, personal loans, debit and prepaid cards — plus SME, commercial and corporate banking, trade finance and a strong remittance business. For businesses that buy or sell across West Africa, the ability to hold and settle in several currencies within one group is the practical draw.

Pricing is the thing to check. Cross-border transfers within the Ecobank network are usually cheaper than a SWIFT wire, but they are not free, and everyday local fees vary by account tier. Get the current tariff guide and compare the monthly maintenance fee, local inter-bank transfer charge and MoMo transfer cost against a couple of rivals.

Opening an account: what you'll need

The Xpress Account is a low-limit entry account. To move beyond its limits, the Bank of Ghana's Ghana Card rule applies — the card has been the sole accepted identification at licensed institutions since 1 July 2022, and the revised late-2025 guidance requires biometric verification with liveness checks for digital onboarding. Expect to submit your Ghana Card details and pass a selfie check in the app, or present the card at a branch or Xpress Point.

Is your money protected?

Yes, up to the statutory limit. Ecobank Ghana is a member of the Ghana Deposit Protection Scheme under Act 931, which insures GH¢6,250 per depositor per bank, principal and interest included; larger balances are recovered from the receiver if a bank fails. The limit is reviewed every two years under the 2025 amendment, so confirm the current figure in our GDPC explainer.

If something goes wrong

Complain to Ecobank first — through its contact centre, the app, or a branch — and keep the complaint reference number the Bank of Ghana requires every provider to issue. The bank has 20 working days to decide (up to 10 more if it tells you in advance that the case is complex). If it does not, or you disagree with the outcome, petition the Bank of Ghana's Financial Stability Department within 20 working days; BoG must rule within 20 working days, and its decision binds the bank.

Who it suits

Ecobank's edge is regional reach — if you send or receive money across West Africa or the wider continent regularly, its pan-African rails are more convenient and usually cheaper than a purely domestic bank plus a wire. Its physical network is also large enough for everyday cash banking, and the Xpress Account is an easy, fast way in.

It suits less well if cross-border transfer is not a priority and you simply want the lowest local fees, in which case weigh it against Fidelity or Zenith.

Before you open an account

  • Confirm current fees for cross-border transfers specifically — this is where pricing varies most between banks.
  • Check the limits on an Xpress Account and what verification lifts them.
  • If cross-border isn't your need, compare everyday local fees against a domestic-focused bank.
