Standard Chartered Ghana Review (2026): Is It Right for You?
Standard Chartered Bank Ghana PLC is the oldest bank in the country and the local arm of the London-headquartered Standard Chartered Group. It is licensed by the Bank of Ghana, listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange, and runs one of the most digital operations in the market — a small branch network, a full digital bank in the SC Mobile app, and international transfers built in. This review sets out what that combination means for you.
Who Standard Chartered Ghana is
The bank began in 1896 as the Bank of British West Africa, which makes it the first bank to operate in what is now Ghana. It has been listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange since 1991 (ticker SCB), so its capital position, results and dividends are public. The group behind it operates across Asia, Africa and the Middle East, which is what gives the Ghanaian bank its international transfer capability and its wealth-management shelf.
Reach: small footprint, high digital penetration
According to its 2024 interim reports the bank operates 27 branches and 56 ATMs in Ghana's major towns and cities, and its 2024 annual report cites a 95% digital penetration rate among customers. In other words, this is a bank designed to be used from your phone; the branches exist for the things an app cannot do. If you deposit cash often or live outside the main cities, that is a real limitation — compare GCB or Ecobank for reach.
Access and mobile banking
- USSD code:
*977#— register your mobile number with the bank first to use it. - SC Mobile app (Android/iOS) — launched as a full digital bank in 2019, it is the centre of the customer experience.
- Online banking with the same credentials as the app.
What the app can do
- Open an account in as little as 15 minutes — Current, Savings Plus or Fixed Deposit — entirely in-app, and you can save and resume the application if you don't finish in one sitting.
- Transfer funds within Standard Chartered, to other local banks, and to international destination accounts — a genuine differentiator if you send or receive money abroad regularly.
- Everyday transactions: airtime and data bundles, mobile money transfers, and utility payments (DStv, ECG, Ghana Water).
- Log in with your existing Online Banking credentials, or fingerprint on supported devices.
- SC DigiAdvisory for investment guidance within the app.
Accounts, cards and investments
Standard Chartered's shelf is aimed at salaried and affluent customers:
- Current accounts: Standard Current, Access 24/7, the Diva Club account for women, a Premium current account and a Foreign Current account for holding hard currency.
- Savings: Savings Plus, My Dream Savings (goal-based) and a Premium Savings account.
- Lending: a personal unsecured loan and security-backed lending against investments.
- Cards: Visa Platinum, Gold and Infinite debit cards, with Infinite at the top of the range.
- Investments: fixed-income securities, mutual funds and wealth management. Money in these products is an investment, not a deposit, and sits outside deposit protection — compare any quoted yield against Treasury bills for the same term.
Fees sit at the premium end of the market. Get the current tariff guide and look specifically at the monthly maintenance charge, minimum balance, and — because this is where the bank is most useful — the fee and exchange-rate margin on international transfers.
Opening an account: what you'll need
The 15-minute digital account is real, but it runs on the Bank of Ghana's Ghana Card rule: the card has been the only accepted identification at licensed institutions since 1 July 2022, and the revised late-2025 guidance requires biometric verification with liveness checks for digital onboarding. Have your Ghana Card ready and expect a selfie check in SC Mobile.
Is your money protected?
Yes, up to the statutory limit. Standard Chartered Ghana is a member of the Ghana Deposit Protection Scheme under Act 931, which insures GH¢6,250 per depositor per bank, principal and interest included; larger balances are recovered from the receiver if a bank fails. The limit is reviewed every two years under the 2025 amendment — check the current figure in our GDPC explainer. Investments held through the bank are not covered.
If something goes wrong
Complain to the bank first — through its call centre, the app or a branch — and keep the complaint reference number the Bank of Ghana requires. The bank has 20 working days to decide (up to 10 more if it warns you the case is complex). If you get no answer or disagree, petition the Bank of Ghana's Financial Stability Department within 20 working days; it must investigate and rule within 20 working days, and its decision binds the bank.
Who it suits
Standard Chartered's international reach makes it a strong fit if you regularly send or receive money internationally — for business, family abroad, or travel — alongside solid everyday banking. The fast, save-and-resume digital account opening is a genuine convenience, and the investment shelf suits customers who want funds and securities in the same app as their account.
It suits less well if you bank in cash, live outside the main cities, or want the lowest everyday fees — a purely domestic bank will usually be cheaper for local-only use.
Before you open an account
- Confirm current fees, particularly for international transfers — this is where Standard Chartered's pricing matters most compared with a domestic bank.
- Check the minimum balance on the tier you are offered.
- If cross-border transfers are not a priority, weigh it against Ecobank (pan-African reach) or a domestic bank with lower everyday fees.
