Stanbic Bank Ghana Review (2026): Is It Right for You? — Rateweb

Stanbic Bank Ghana is the local subsidiary of South Africa's Standard Bank Group, Africa's largest bank by assets. It is a Bank of Ghana–licensed universal bank with a reputation for dependable USSD banking, a strong public-sector and payroll offering, and — unusually for Ghana — an in-house range of investment funds and insurance. Here is what it offers and who it is built for.

Who Stanbic Ghana is

Stanbic began operating in Ghana in 1999 and is wholly owned by the Standard Bank Group, which is listed in Johannesburg. It is not listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange, but it publishes full annual reports on its website; the 2024 report shows the bank operating 140 ATMs (up from 136 the year before) alongside branches in every region. The parent's scale is the practical advantage: deep capital, group-wide technology, and easy cross-border banking if you have dealings in South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria or the other Standard Bank markets.

Access and mobile banking

  • USSD code: *715# — works without cellular data, giving you account access, payments, airtime and mini-statements anywhere you have signal, even outside Ghana.
  • Stanbic Bank App (iOS, Android and Huawei AppGallery) for full-featured banking.
  • Internet banking and a self-service portal for statements and account maintenance; Business Online for companies.
  • To get started with mobile/USSD banking you register once at a Stanbic branch, because the bank verifies your Ghana Card in person first.

What USSD and the app can do

  • Balance checks, mini-statements and account access from any phone.
  • Airtime top-up without visiting a vendor.
  • Money transfers, including paying beneficiaries you have already set up through Internet Banking.
  • Access your accounts outside Ghana — useful if you travel or split time between countries.

Accounts and products

Stanbic's product shelf is where it stands apart from a plain transactional bank:

  • Everyday and targeted accounts: standard current and savings accounts; JoyPack, an account bundle for public-sector workers; Obaa Sima, a women's banking proposition; and ContractSave and PureSave for disciplined saving.
  • Savings and investment: a Bonus Investment Account and Fixed Deposit Investment Account, plus two in-house collective investment schemes — the Stanbic Cash Trust Fund (a money-market-style fund) and the Stanbic Income Fund Trust. Compare any quoted yield against Treasury bills for the same term.
  • Lending: personal loans, vehicle loans, home loans, a salary advance and consumer finance. Stanbic is also one of the banks through which public-sector and scheme mortgage rates are sometimes available — see how mortgages work in Ghana.
  • Insurance: education, funeral, motor, homeowners and travel plans sold through the bank.
  • Remittances, trade finance and merchant solutions for businesses.

Opening an account: what you'll need

The Bank of Ghana has required the Ghana Card as the sole identification for transactions at licensed institutions since 1 July 2022, and its revised late-2025 guidance requires biometric verification for digital onboarding. Stanbic's process is branch-first: bring your Ghana Card, proof of address and, for a salary account, an employer letter or payslip. Registration for *715# and the app happens at the same visit.

Is your money protected?

Yes, up to the statutory limit. Stanbic Ghana is a member of the Ghana Deposit Protection Scheme under Act 931, which insures GH¢6,250 per depositor per bank (principal plus interest); anything above that is claimed from the receiver if a bank fails. Note that money placed in the Cash Trust Fund or the Income Fund Trust is an investment, not a deposit, and is not covered by the scheme. The deposit limit is reviewed every two years under the 2025 amendment, so check the current figure in our GDPC explainer.

If something goes wrong

Raise the complaint with Stanbic first — through its customer service centre, Enterprise Direct for business customers, or a branch — and record the complaint reference number the Bank of Ghana requires every provider to issue. The bank has 20 working days to decide (up to 10 more if it warns you the matter is complex). If there is no answer or you disagree, petition the Bank of Ghana's Financial Stability Department within 20 working days; it must rule within 20 working days, and its ruling binds the bank.

Who it suits

Stanbic suits customers who want dependable USSD banking that works anywhere with signal, backed by Africa's largest banking group. It is a particularly good fit for public-sector employees (JoyPack, scheme mortgages), for anyone who wants savings, investment funds and insurance under one roof, and for people with cross-border ties to other Standard Bank markets.

It suits less well if you want a fully remote account opening — Stanbic still starts at a branch — or if a large local branch network matters more to you than the product range, in which case look at GCB.

Before you open an account

  • Factor in the in-branch registration for USSD/mobile banking.
  • Confirm current fees, and check whether the account tier you are offered includes free or discounted MoMo transfers.
  • If you are buying a fund or insurance through the bank, ask for the fee sheet and remember these products sit outside deposit protection.

Compare Stanbic against other Ghanaian bank accounts, and if a home loan is on your radar, see the home-loan calculator to model the numbers first.
