Absa Ghana Review (2026): Is It Right for You?
Absa Bank Ghana Ltd is the former Barclays Bank Ghana, now part of the Johannesburg-listed Absa Group. It is a large, internationally backed bank licensed by the Bank of Ghana, and its app leads the market on one thing in particular: security features that do not depend on SMS codes. This review covers the bank's background, its products, and whether its security-first approach is worth choosing it for.
Who Absa Ghana is
Absa Ghana carries more than a century of Barclays history in the country. In 2016 Barclays Plc sold down its African business, and on 10 February 2020 the Ghanaian bank was renamed Absa Bank Ghana, on the same day as Absa's subsidiaries in Botswana, Kenya, Mauritius, Seychelles, Tanzania and Zambia. Customers' account numbers, cards and branches did not change. The parent, Absa Group Limited, is listed on the JSE in South Africa and operates in twelve African countries with around 42,000 employees, so the Ghanaian bank has a deep-pocketed owner and a group-wide technology platform behind it.
Absa Ghana is not listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange, but it publishes its financial statements on its website. At the time of the rebrand it operated more than 160 ATMs nationwide; use the branch and ATM locator on its site for the current footprint near you.
Access and mobile banking
- USSD code:
*895#. - Absa Banking App (Android/iOS) — a full digital banking experience with a clear overview across all your accounts.
- Internet banking for personal customers; Business Internet Banking and Absa Access for companies.
What the app can do
- Filtered transaction history and seamless transfers between your own accounts.
- Send money to a mobile wallet, buy airtime and pay bills.
- In-App Authentication — the standout feature: logins and transactions can require approval on your registered primary device (a push notification or in-app prompt) rather than relying on SMS one-time passwords alone. Because a SIM-swap attacker cannot intercept an in-app prompt the way they can an SMS, this closes the most common fraud route in Ghana.
- Travel Notification — flag upcoming travel so your card is not blocked for unusual activity.
- Visa Direct — send funds directly to a Visa card issued in Ghana, typically reflecting within around 30 minutes.
- Proxy Pay — send or receive money using a Proxy ID instead of sharing full account details.
Accounts and products
Absa offers a full retail shelf — current and savings accounts, fixed deposits, personal loans, and one of the longer-established credit card programmes in Ghana (a Barclays legacy) — plus business banking, corporate and investment banking, and wealth management. Ask for the current tariff guide before choosing a tier; the lines that matter most are the monthly maintenance fee, the inter-bank transfer charge and, if you take a card, the annual fee and interest rate.
Opening an account: what you'll need
The Bank of Ghana made the Ghana Card the only acceptable identification for transactions at licensed institutions from 1 July 2022, and its revised late-2025 guidance requires biometric verification with liveness checks for digital onboarding. Have your Ghana Card ready whether you open in a branch or in the app, and expect a selfie or fingerprint check.
Is your money protected?
Yes, up to the statutory limit. Absa Ghana is a member of the Ghana Deposit Protection Scheme under Act 931, which insures GH¢6,250 per depositor per bank (principal plus interest). Above that, you claim from the receiver if a bank fails. The 2025 amendment requires the limit to be reviewed every two years, so confirm the current figure in our GDPC explainer.
If something goes wrong
Complain to Absa first — on 0800 222 333 (MTN/Telecel), +233 30 242 9150, by email to customerexperience.gh@absa.africa, or at a branch — and record the complaint reference number the Bank of Ghana requires. Absa has 20 working days to respond (up to 10 more if it warns you the case is complex). If you get no decision or reject it, you have 20 working days to petition the Bank of Ghana's Financial Stability Department, which must rule within 20 working days; its decision binds the bank.
Who it suits
Absa's security-forward app suits anyone who wants real protection against SIM-swap and OTP-interception fraud — see how to spot an unlicensed lender and avoid fraud for the wider context. Visa Direct and Proxy Pay are convenient if you regularly send money to other people's cards or accounts, and the group's footprint helps if you have banking ties in Kenya, Zambia, Botswana or South Africa.
It suits less well if you want the widest local branch network (GCB) or a fully phone-based instant account (Zenith or Fidelity).
Before you open an account
- Confirm current account fees and minimum balances directly with Absa.
- If in-app transaction authorisation matters to you, ask specifically how it is enabled and which account tiers include it.
- If you take a credit card, get the interest rate and fees in writing.
